ACLU of Mississippi works to combat voter suppression, advance pro-voter reforms, broaden access to the political process, and ensure fair political representation of marginalized communities and communities of color. Our methods include legislative and policy advocacy, litigation, community organizing and media and communications.
THE LGBTQ JUSTICE PROJECT
The LGBTQ Justice Project of the ACLU of Mississippi is a legal project offering service to LGBTQ identifying people in issues related to family law, civil rights, and name and gender marker changes. Additionally, the LGBTQ Justice Project will connect attorneys across the state to expertise on LGBTQ issues and best practices in working with clients of all sexual orientations and genders; and advocate for laws and policy that expand civil rights to marginalized LGBTQ communities.
The LGBTQ Justice Project has openings for Legal Internships in Jackson, Miss. Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the team assisting in all aspects of litigation, policy advocacy and communications campaigns.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW: SUMMER
Location: In-person work in Jackson, Mississippi.
Time Commitment: Hours are flexible with a goal of 40 hours/week.
Internship Duration: Full-time internships are a 12-week period.
Pay: Law school students will be paid $20/hr. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW: SPRING OR FALL SEMESTER
Location: Remote or in-person work in Jackson, Mississippi.
Time Commitment: Hours are flexible with a goal of 20 hours/week.
Internship Duration: Part-time internships are a 12-week period.
Pay: Law school students will be paid $20/hr. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns will gain valuable experience by working with the team on a wide variety of issues. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Drafting memoranda, affidavits and briefs.
- Conducting legal and policy research.
- Researching prospects for new litigation, including both factual and legal claims.
- Researching and drafting materials for public education.
- Legislative bill tracking and analysis.
- Other projects as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
The internship is open to law students who will have completed at least one year of law school before the internship commences. Interns should possess the following:
- Demonstrated commitment to the advancement and protection of the civil liberties of LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV.
- Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and writing.
- Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills.
- The initiative to see projects through to completion.
- A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice.
- Commitment to the mission of the ACLU of Mississippi.
