HB 585: Dignity and Safety for Incarcerated Women Act

This bill would enable incarcerated individuals to sue the corrections facility if they “encounter”  a transgender person in bathrooms, changing rooms, or sleeping areas.
This bill is overtly transphobic, ignoring the rights, privacy, and safety of transgender individuals. It disregards their beliefs, feelings, and well-being while in detention. Moreover, it mandates violation of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), potentially leading to a flood of legal complications for these facilities. This bill makes correctional facilities less safe for everyone.
