JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch has announced she will join a federal lawsuit filed against four battleground states, and aimed at challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election.
ACLU of Mississippi Executive Director Jarvis Dortch made the following statement in response:
“Apparently, Lynn Fitch has no problem wasting taxpayer dollars on self-defeating lawsuits. Over the summer and fall she sued to the cut short the U.S. Census, something that would have left Mississippians undercounted and under resourced. During the middle of a pandemic, she also sued to take health insurance away from 100,000 Mississippians and allow insurance companies to deny coverage to Mississippians with pre-existing conditions.
Today, she continued her extreme, wasteful use of Mississippi's Attorney General's office.
The attorney general joined a Texas lawsuit that asks the Supreme Court to suspend our democracy and throw out millions of votes in 4 states (Georgia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan). Why those four states? Because that would allow Donald Trump to win an electoral college.
Fitch is using taxpayer dollars to fight reality. The reality that Joe Biden was elected the 46th President of the United States. The reality that even President Trump's attorney general, William Barr, admits there was no widespread voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.
How ridiculous is Fitch’s lawsuit? She is arguing that these swing states harm Mississippi voters because they allow absentee ballots to be counted if they arrive after election day. That is the exact same process we use in Mississippi! Mississippi absentee ballots can also count if they are postmarked prior to the election, but arrive a few days after the election.
To be clear, by signing on to this suit, Fitch is attempting to disenfranchise millions of voters.
This is a frivolous lawsuit that doesn't snowball's chance. It is appalling that an attorney general, someone charged of carrying out justice in our state, is so comfortable with attaching her name to this partisan lawsuit that does nothing to serve Mississippi.”
