In response to the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, ACLU of Mississippi Executive Director, Jarvis Dortch, has issued the following statement:

Donald Trump was democratically reelected. We hope that President Trump respects the democratic process that allowed him to be voted back into office.

As a candidate, Donald Trump promised to attack the rights of LGBTQ people, implement archaic and cruel immigration policies, undermine press freedoms, and make it harder for Americans to vote.

As a President, we hope he respects the rule of law and the right to free speech.

If not, the ACLU and the ACLU-MS will oppose his administration in court rooms, legislatures and the streets. No matter the President, the ACLU will always fight to protect the rights of marginalized people and communities.
